All through the month of September, the Covid cases fell. Peaking in early September at 160,000 cases detected daily, the numbers kept falling until now they stand at under 110,000. So that's a good month of progress.

What hadn't been progressing, through most of the month, was the death rate, which usually lags three weeks or so behind the cases. That makes sense because the people dying now are often people who first tested positive three or four weeks ago. Well, three or four weeks has now passed, and I'm happy to report that deaths are dropping. We reported an average of 1476 deaths per day over the last week, down from 1527 the week before. While those are still high numbers, the good news is that motion has started in the right direction.

The hospitals are also continuing to see less patients. About 8300 people per day are being admitted to US hospitals with Covid right now, down from about 9800 a week ago. Now, even hospitalizations, which are one of our best numbers for tracking the pandemic, aren't perfect. That 8300 includes everyone admitted to a hospital with Covid, even if they weren't admitted because of Covid. But if the hospitals are seeing less people with Covid, that's good news regardless.

Everything is moving in the right direction.

Numbers are from the CDC Covid Tracking pages.
