Today, the United States reported 47,486 cases of the novel coronavirus, up from 44,927 a week ago (Covid Tracking Project). That's six days in a week now the week-over-week numbers have been up. The country reported 901 deaths today, down from 1018 a week ago. The deaths haven't been doing the real smooth upward thing the cases have -- there was a jump down in the seven-day rolling average around labor day and a jump up about a week later, and no clear consistent trendline the last eleven days or so. Deaths are still probably falling in reality; there's a multi-day lag on a lot of death reporting, and a jerk downward around labor day weekend with a jerk back upward as reporting caught back up makes sense given the way a seven-day rolling average works. Hospitalizations are still going down, for what that's worth. We're reporting 29,492 patients in the hospital with coronavirus right now, down from 31,421 a week ago. The usual graphs are attached.
