Today, the United States reported 29,853 new cases of the novel coronavirus, up a hair from 28,628 a week ago (Covid Tracking Project). That comparison might not be quite as far as a normal comparison, because a week ago today was Labor Day, and reporting slowed down noticeably over the holiday weekend. Another way to tally things up would be to compare the average over the last seven days to the average the seven days before: that number has dropped from 39,488 to 34,633 -- a drop of about 15%.

We reported 382 deaths today, up from 224 a week ago, but again a week ago today was a weird day. Over the last week, the rolling average has dropped from 818 to 746, or about 9%.

29,795 people are currently reported to be in the hospital, down from 31,999 a week ago, or about 7%.

Over the same week, the testing positivity rate has fallen from 5.2 to 5.0%. The usual graphs are attached.
