Today, the United States reported 54,184 new cases of the novel coronavirus, down from 69,917 cases a week ago (Covid Tracking Project). The graphs look like the cases are dropping pretty sharply, but there's a Hurricane on, which has interfered with testing centers a bit.
However, we can still correct a bit for the decline in tests by looking at the percentage of tests that are coming back positive. And that's decreasing still, too. So the continued decline in cases probably can't be explained just by the decrease in testing. But Hurricane Isaias disippated yesterday, so let's give it about a week and we'll see what the post-Hurricane situation looks like.
Today we reported 1253 deaths, down slightly from 1291 yesterday. Overall, deaths are about flat for the month of August so far.
