Today, the United States reported 44,328 cases of the novel coronavirus, down from 46,295 a week ago (Covid Tracking Project).
We reported 1014 deaths today, down from 1024 a week ago.
If you follow the seven-day rolling averages, cases are down about 5% over the last week, and deaths are down about 6%. That's still progress, though not as fast as the few previous weeks.
I'm not 100% sure exactly what's going on with the schools. It sounds like some are opening, some not opening, some partially opening. Whatever mix of things they're doing, it hasn't caused a nationwide spike in cases so far, so that's nice to see, although of course we'll all feel better about that if the cases keep going down another month or two without reversing.
