Today, the United States reported 42,551 new cases of the novel coronavirus, up just slightly from 42,161 a week ago (Covid Tracking Project). Yesterday we had 52,406 cases, and the day before that 57,652. So that's two days of pretty steeply dropping cases. The optimistic take on this would be that we're starting to get a handle on the spread of this thing again. On the other hand, this is the July 4th weekend, so it might take a few days to see whether there's just been a couple of days of under-reporting due to less people being at work.
We reported 209 deaths today, down from 271 a week ago. This is the lowest number of cases we've ever reported in a day, and if this wasn't July 4th weekend, it would be very exciting progress. As it is, we'll probably want to wait a week or so and see if the deaths are still declining.
The usual graphs are attached.
