This was originally a Facebook post of mine from 2020-7-27, and is archived here as a curiosity. Minor changes to formatting, as well as basic copy-edits, may have been made in the transition from Facebook post to web format.
Today, the United States reported 55,134 new cases of the novel coronavirus, down from 57,948 a week ago (Covid Tracking Project). We're now at 10 days since the last record was set. Hopefully we can go beyond just plateauing, though, and actually get this thing down quite a bit before cold weather hits, because cold weather usually brings an increase in most respiratory viruses.
On the other hand, we reported 1059 deaths today, up from 365 a week ago (Covid Tracking Project). That seems a bit sharp, so maybe today some state reported some old deaths or something. But overall, the trend the last few weeks has been toward higher numbers of deaths.
I'm having trouble attaching the usual graphs, because I'm doing this while also updating from Ubuntu 19.10 to 20.04. If you're running 19.10, this is a reminder: it's not supported anymore. Get you some 20.04.
