Today the US reported 2500 deaths linked to Covid, up from 693 a week ago (Covid Tracking Project). Or at least that's what's in the spreadsheet maintained by the Covid Tracking Project. Does that sound crazy to you? It sounds crazy to me. I'll wait a day or two and see if it's an error that gets corrected, or if it represents old deaths that didn't get reported till now, or what. There's been a couple times they've reported some off-the-wall number and then corrected it a few minutes later.
We reported 41,939 new cases of the virus in the US today, shattering yesterday's record of 38,672, and up from 27,473 a week ago. This is less unexpected, but still very bad.
The ICU at Texas Medical Center is now 100% full, so I'd expect we'll probably see some kind of restrictions coming back in Texas in the next week or so. It's politically hard to shut things down again, but it's also politically hard to stand by while people can't get into ICU's. Presumably Governor Abbott will try to find some way to thread that needle.
The usual graphs are attached.
