Today, the United States reported 695 deaths linked to the novel coronavirus, down from 936 a week ago (Covid Tracking Project). The seven-day rolling average is at 624 deaths per day, a new low, compared with 815 a week ago. So on that front things look like they're improving at a very decent pace.
However, the number of people dying today tells us not about how the virus is spreading today, but how the virus was spreading four to six weeks ago, when those people first caught it.
If you look at the number of cases being caught each day, there's some upward movement going on. It's not great. On the other hand, Kinsa's Health Weather still isn't showing an abnormal amount of fever in the country. And testing still looks like it's trending upward, so that's good too.
So, all in all, things are pretty unclear at the moment.
