This page exists to catch abbreviations used on this site. I'll be adding to it as I notice or use new abbreviations.

  • ABD = Anchor Bible Dictionary, now known as the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary.
  • ASV = American Standard Version
  • BDB = Brown-Driver-Briggs, the 1906 lexicon of Hebrew
  • DCH = Dictionary of Classical Hebrew
  • DDD2 = Dictionary of Deities and Demons, 2nd edition.
  • Dillmann = when speaking of matters concerning Genesis, "Dillmann" refers to Dillmann's commentary. This is Augusts Dillman's Genesis: Critically and Exegetically Expounded, in its 1897 translation by William B. Stevenson. It can be found in two volumes on archive.org: here and here.
  • Driver = when speaking of matters concerning Genesis, "Driver" refers to S. R. Driver's commentary on Genesis if no further specifics are given: The Book of Genesis: With Introduction and Notes, tenth edition (1916). It lives at archive.org.
  • EB = the great 1899 Encyclopaedia Biblica
  • HALOT = Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament
  • JPS1917 = the 1917 Jewish Publication Society Bible
  • Kittel = Biblia Hebraica. To the best of my knowledge, this is the most comprehensive collection of text-critical information about the Hebrew Bible to be found in the public domain. A 1909 edition that I often use can be found online at the Internet Archive: part 1, part 2.
  • KJV = King James Version
  • NET = New English Translation, an evangelical translation of the Bible
  • NETS = New English Translation of the Septuagint, an academic translation
  • NHEB = New Heart English Bible
  • NIV = the New International Version
  • NJPS = New Jewish Publication Society translation of the Hebrew Bible
  • NKJV = New King James Version
  • NRSV = New Revised Standard Version
  • NRSVUE = New Revised Standard Version - Updated Edition
  • RV = Revised Version
  • Skinner = when speaking of matters concerning Genesis, this is John Skinner's commentary (1910). It can be found at archive.org.
  • WEB = World English Bible
