Ginzberg, Louis: Legends of the Jews
...

This page was published in July 2017.

One of the towering figures in American Jewish history is Louis Ginzberg, whose greatest work was Legends of the Jews, which collected haggadic material from a wide variety of Jewish sources and placed it in chronological order. For those who are unfamiliar with haggadah, the upshot is this. The work is not an attempt to work out the original meanings of biblical texts, but to collect the traditions that have arisen regarding those texts. These traditions add detail, fill in narrative “blanks,” and so on.

The work was originally written in German, but an English translation appeared quickly following the original publication in 1909. It is mostly available online in its various volumes: 1 “From the Creation to Jacob”, 2 “From Joseph to the Exodus”, 3 “From the Exodus to the Death of Moses”, 4 “From Joshua to Esther”, 6 “Notes to Volume III and IV”, 7 “Index.”

Unfortunately, I have not been able to locate volume 5 online. If I come across it, I will update this page.
