Genesis 4:4 -- the fat thereof

And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering.

The KJV’s the fat thereof is as ambiguous as the Hebrew underlying it. There are two opinions I know of as to what the phrase means. It means either the fat portions, the fatty parts of the sacrifice which were burned for God’s use, or else the fat animals, the best-looking sheep and/or goats from Abel’s flock.

The notes to the NET seem to indicate that the question is still not settled.
