Genesis 20

This post was created in August 2017.

19 July 2022 -- I've since abandoned this specific project, and am working on something a bit different. This page remains for anyone who might find it interesting.

This is part of my translation project. This is a very rough draft, basically a lightly edited text of the RV.

Translation

1 And Abraham journeyed from there toward the land of the Negev, and settled between Kadesh and Shur, and he sojourned in Gerar. 2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister. And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream at night, and said to him, Look: you a dead man because of the woman you have taken, because she is someone’s wife.

4 Now Abimelech had not come near her, and he said, Lord, will you kill even a righteous nation? 5 Did he not say to me, She is my sister? And even she herself said, He is my brother. With a pure heart and clean hands I did this.

6 And God said to him in the dream, Yes, I know that you did this with a pure heart, and I also kept you from sinning against me. That is why I did not let you touch her. 7 Now then, restore the man’s wife, because he is a prophet, and he will pray for you, and you will live, and all who are yours.

8 And Abimelech rose early in the morning and called all his servants, and told all these things in their hearing, and the men were very afraid. 9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said to him, What have you done to us? And how have I sinned against you, that you would bring on me and my kingdom a great sin? You have done things to me that ought not be done.

10 And Abimelech said to Abraham, What did you see that you would do such a thing?

11 And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place, and they will kill me on account of my wife. 12 And also, she really is my sister: my father’s daughter but not my mother’s daughter, and she became my wife. 13 And then, when the gods caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said to her, Do me this kindness. Wherever we go, say about me, He is my brother.

14 And Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and male and female slaves, and gave them to Abraham, and restored to him Sarah his wife. 15 And Abimelech said, Look: my land is in front of you. Settle where you please.

16 And to Sarah he said, Look: I have given your brother a thousand [shekels of] silver. Therefore it is a covering of the eyes for you to all who are with you. [This verse needs work].

17 And Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his female slaves, and they gave birth to children. 18 For Yahweh had closed up all the wombs of Abimelech’s household because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.
