gen-c19-old-translation-notes

This post was created probably around September 2017

19 July 2022 -- I've since abandoned this specific project, and am working on something a bit different. This page remains for anyone who might find it interesting.

This is part of my translation project. This is a very rough beginning to the notes.

Notes

\5. have our way with them. Literally, know them.

\17. he said. Not they said, but he said. Odd.

\30. There is a weird reversal here. Earlier, Lot was told to go to the hills, and he requested to go to Zoar, because he was afraid of the hills. Then, he becomes afraid in Zoar and runs off to the hills.

\31. Here begins another weird reversal. First Lot offers his daughters to be raped, and at the end of the story they rape him.

\37. Moab. It doesn’t work perfectly, but the name looks like perhaps it can be a play on “from father.”

ben-Ammi. “son of my people,” that is, inbred.

benei Ammon. Hebrew for “sons of Ammon,” that is, the Ammonites. The benei is left untranslated here to make the relationship between ben-ammi and benei-ammon more explicit.
