1 Then Abram went up from Egypt: he, his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the Negev. 2 And Abram was very wealthy in livestock, in silver, and in gold. 3 And he continued his nomadic journeys from the Negev as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been in the beginning, between Bethel and Hai, 4 to the place where he had made an altar at first. And there Abram called on the name of Yahweh.

5 And Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks and herds, and tents. 6 And the land was not able to support them living together, because their possessions were so numerous that they could not live together. 7 So quarreling broke out between the herders of Abram’s livestock and the herders of Lot’s livestock. And the Canaanites and Perizzites were living in the land at that time., let there be no quarreling between me and you, between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, because we are relatives. 9 Is not the whole land in front of you? Please, separate from me. If [you go] left, I’ll go right, and if [you go] right, I’ll go left.”_

10 Lot lifted up his eyes and saw the whole Jordan Plain, that all of it was well-watered (before Yahweh destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of Yahweh, like the land of Egypt as you go toward Zoar. 11 Lot chose for himself all the Jordan Plain. So Lot pulled up stakes and went eastward, and they separated from one another. 12 Abram settled in the land of Canaan, and Lot settled among the cities of the Plain, and pitched his tent as far as Sodom. 13 Now the men of Sodom were very wicked sinners in Yahweh’s view.

14 And Yahweh said to Abram, after Lot separated from him, “Lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are: north, and south, and east, and west, 15 because  I will give all the land which you see to you and to your descendants forever. 16 I will make your descendants like the dust of the earth, so that if someone is able to count the dust of the earth, then your descendants could also be counted. 17 Get up: walk throughout the land, along its length and its breadth, because I will give it to you.”

18 Then Abram took his tent and came and settled at Elonei Mamre, which is in Hebron, and there he built an altar to Yahweh.
