31. severe. Literally, “heavy”.
38. spirit of God. Here we see one of the downsides of reverential capitalization. The WEB reads “Spirit of God”, as if to indicate that a member of the Trinity is being spoken of. It is one thing to smuggle Trinitarian theology into Genesis; it is entirely another to put on the lips of the Pharaoh!
40. by your command. Literally, “upon your mouth”.
43. Bow the knee! Hebrew ʾabrek. The meaning of this term is uncertain – “Bow the knee!” is a guess.
44. without your consent__. Hebrew bilʿadeka, perhaps more literally “without you”.
45. Poti Phera. The name is spelled just slightly differently from the name of Joseph’s master, Potiphar. The difference comes down to one letter and a space: פוטיפר versus פוטי פרע. It seems hard to write this off as a mere coincidence.
51. Manasseh, For God has made me forget. In the Hebrew, “Manasseh” is mᵉnašeh, while “has made me forget is naš ᵉni.
52. Ephraim, For God has made me fruitful. In the Hebrew, “has made me fruitful” is hiphrani.
57. all countries. The Masoretic Text reads kol haʾareṣ, “all the world”, but Skinner and BHS (1997) suggest following the Septuagint and emending to kol haʾaraṣot, “all countries”. It would appear that KJV, ASV, and WEB all follow the emendation here. The emendation solves the grammatical difficulty that haʾareṣ is followed not by baʾ, singular, but by baʾu, plural.
