Notes

1, 3. to the god. Hebrew laʾel, with the article.

8. Allon Bacuth. Hebrew for, “oak of weeping” (see BDB, entry for BKWT).

11. El Shaddai. As in 28:3.

11. assembly. Hebrew qahal.

11. loins. Hebrew ḥalaṣayim. The WEB’s “body” is a euphemism.

15. Bethel. Meaning “House of El”.

18. Benoni. Hebrew for “son of my trouble” (WEB note).

18. Benjamin. In the context of this verse, it seems to make the most sense to assume that the author is intending to read the name ben yamin as “son of the right hand”. However, the name itself can also be read as “son of the south”, or “southerner”, and is appropriate for the tribe which lived at far southern end of the Kingdom of Israel.

21. Eder. The MT reads a segol as the last vowel of this word, so I would expect to see “Eder”, but the KJV reads “Edar”, for what reason I do not know.

29. was gathered to his kinsmen. A typical biblical expression for death and burial. The Hebrew ʿam sometimes means “people”, but if that were its meaning in this passage it would be in the singular form. It is here in a plural form, so this must be the somewhat less common meaning of the term, “kinsman”, that is used here. Compare another biblical expression for death, “rest with one’s fathers”.
