3. El Shaddai. There is a tradition of translating this term as ‘God Almighty’. It is an old tradition, but likely does not reflect the original meaning of the term.
3. congregation. Hebrew qahal.
5. Aramean. Hebrew ʾarammi.
12. stairway. Hebrew sullam, סלם. The word appears only here, and consequently it is hard to definitively nail down its meaning. See DCH for various proposals.
12. set up on. It looks like a typo has caused the WEB to read here ‘set upon’.
12. angels of God. Due to the nature of the Hebrew construct state, biblical Hebrew will not generally distinguish between ‘angels of God’ and ‘the angels of God’, so here I have chosen the less definite rendering.
14. bless each other. As in 12:3.
17. dreadful. A participle derived from yrʾ, fear. My concern is ‘awesome’, especially in more recent forms of English, may not have the right connotations.
17. heaven. Hebrew šamayim, or, the sky.
19. Bethel. Two words in Hebrew: beit ʾel, which can be translated ‘House of El’ or ‘House of God’.
