1. El Shaddai. There is an old tradition, extending back to the Septuagint, that this term means ‘God Almighty’, but it is not at all clear from the Hebrew term itself that this is so.
1. blameless. Hebrew tamim.
5. the father of a multitude of nations. The text is at least vaguely connecting the new name ʾabraham to ʾab hamon goyim, ‘father of a multitude of nations’.
7. to become your god. Hebrew lihyot lᵉka lelohim. By establishing the covenant, it is not that Yahweh attains the status of deity. It is that he has become the deity his own people. There is a similar construction in verse 8.
11. a covenant. The noun is anarthrous in the Hebrew.
