5. loins of Jacob. That is, his reproductive faculties. The WEB’s “body” is a euphemism.

10. go up. In the Hebrew Bible, movement from Egypt toward Canaan is typically described as “going up”, while the reverse, movement from Canaan to Egypt, is “going down”. Instead of the literal “go up”, the WEB here reads “escape”.

13. compelled the Israelites work as slaves. The Hebrew verb is a hifʿil form of the verb ʿBD, for which see BDB. Both in its etymology and in its biblical uses this verb is associated with slavery, and so it seems to me that “made … serve” as found in ASV and WEB does not make the slavery involved as explicit as the Hebrew verb does.

21. gave them families. Literally, “made them houses”. See Driver. Driver, Exodus (1918 [1911]).
