biblicalambiguities.net -- translation disclaimer

biblicalambiguities.net is a website of mine which I'm in the process of winding down, as I migrate whatever content I want to save away from it.

A number of pages on biblicalambiguities contain blocks of the Bible in English. I don't even know whether to call these texts 'translations' because in some cases I didn't do anything close to 'translating' them from Hebrew.

The basic idea is this: I used either the Masoretic Text, or an English public domain translation, and then made whatever tweaks I saw fit, and used that as the base to which I added my notes. At the bottom of this page is a complete list of all the English translation I felt free to borrow from without footnoting each occasion. And 'my notes' is a bit of a complicated phrase too: see the General disclaimer.

How much is my work and how much is the work of those public domain translations varies from page to page and time to time. I have not tracked in detail exactly where the text of every verse came from. However, I can assure you that I didn't copy this material from resources subject to US copyright law. When I use sources written after 1923, I will cite them.

The translation does not in all cases reflect my opinion on what is the 'best' translation. Usually I just slavishly follow the Masoretic Text. If I deviate from the MT on purpose, I footnote the difference. The translation is often more literal than might be optimal for a Bible that is just intended to be read from one end to the other -- the literalness helps in providing English comparisons between different interpretations of the Hebrew, textual variants, and so on.

When I post something, it's not necessarily final. This website was always a work in progress, and I may continue to polish and revise its posts even after bringing them all over here.
