Vav or Waw is a Hebrew letter variously transliterated as w, v, o, or u. You may think of it in this way. The basic ancient sound appears to be a w, as in Wimbledon. When used as a consonant in Hebrew today, it is pronounced as a v, as in viper.
However, vav is also used as a mater lectionis in Hebrew, where it can represent an o or u vowel.
