The TNIV, Today's New International Version, was a short-lived update to the NIV, intended to replace it. It aroused a great deal of hostility in conservative Protestant circles due to its increased use of gender-neutral language. In 2011, it was discontinued, and a new NIV produced, which partially walked back the TNIV's gender-neutrality. The TNIV, like the NIV before it, was produced for the service of conservative evangelicals, and its apologetic tendencies and Christological readings in the Hebrew Bible make it unsuitable for mainstream academic use.
