Myles Coverdale was important in the history of the English Bible as a translator. His work appeared in parts of the Matthew Bible of 1537, and Coverdale oversaw the production of the Great Bible of 1539. He borrowed heavily from Tyndale, and where he did translate himself he did so from Latin and German, so his work still did not provide English readers with a direct translation from the original languages. His Great Bible was the standard government-approved text until the appearance of the Bishops' Bible.
