Maimonides was a towering figure within medieval Judaism. He systematized Jewish law in the Mishne Torah, a work which provided a more orderly exposition of Jewish law than the often haphazard organization of the Talmud. His work was a monumental achievement, and is in some ways a predecessor to the Shulchan Aruch.

Interestingly, from the standpoint of the history of Hebrew manuscripts, Maimonides treated the Aleppo Codex as a standard having halakhic value.
