A hataf qamats is a qamats with what appears to be a shva next to it. It is pronounced like the "o" in "boat". I'm speaking of the pronunciation as it would be heard in an academic setting today, influenced by Israeli and/or Sephardi pronunciation. This should not be taken as a claim about earlier stages of the Hebrew language.
