Genesis 46 is the forty-sixth chapter of Genesis. It comes after Genesis 45 and before Genesis 47.

1 And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beer Sheba, and offered sacrifices to the god of his father Isaac. 2 And God spoke to Israel in visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob.

And he said, Here I am.

3 And he said, I am the El, the god of your father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of you a great nation. 4 I will go down with you into Egypt, and I will also surely bring you up again; and Joseph shall put his hand upon your eyes. 5 And Jacob rose up from Beer Sheba, and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. 6 And they took their animals, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob and all his seed with him: 7 his sons, and his sons' sons with him, his daughters, and his sons's daughters, and all his seed he brought with him into Egypt.

8 And these are the names of the children of Israel, who came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob's first-born. 9 And the sons of Reuben: Hanoch, and Pallu, and Hezron, and Carmi. 10 And the sons of Simeon: Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman. 11 And the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 12 And the sons of Judah: Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Perez, and Zerah; but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. 13 And the sons of Issachar: Tola, and Puvah, and Iob, and Shimron. 14 And the sons of Zebulun: Sered, and Elon, and Jahleel. 15 These are the sons of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob in Paddan-aram, with his daughter Dinah: all the persons among his sons and his daughters were thirty-three. 16 And the sons of Gad: Ziphion, and Haggi, Shuni and Ezbon, Eri, and Arodi, and Areli. 17 And the sons of Asher: Imnah, and Ishvah, and Ishvi, and Beriah, and Serah their sister; and the sons of Beriah: Heber and Malchiel. 18 These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter; and these she bore to Jacob, sixteen persons. 19 The sons of Rachel, Jacob's wife: Joseph and Benjamin. 20 And to Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, the daughter of Poti Phera priest of On, bore to him. 21 And the sons of Benjamin: Bela, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, Ehi, and Rosh, Muppim, and Huppim, and Ard. 22 These are the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob: all the persons were fourteen. 23 And the sons of Dan: Hushim. 24 And the sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem. 25 These are the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, and these she bore Jacob: all the persons were seven. 26 All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, that came out of his loins, besides Jacob's sons' wives, all the persons were sixty-six; 27 and the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt, were two persons: all the persons of the house of Jacob, that came into Egypt, were seventy.

28 And he sent Judah before him to Joseph, to show the way before him to Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen. 29 And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen; and he presented himself to him, and fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while. 30 And Israel said to Joseph, Now let me die, since I have seen your face, that you are still alive.

31 And Joseph said to his brethren, and to his father's house, I will go up, and tell Pharaoh, and will say to him, My brethren, and my father's house, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me; 32 and the men are shepherds, for they have been herdsmen; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have. 33 And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, What is your occupation? 34 that you shall say, Your servants have been herdsmen from our youth even until now, both we, and our fathers: that you may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians.

(46:1) god. On the capitalization, see Capitalization.

(46:2) visions of the night. Were it not for the pointing, one could read a vision of the night. Kittel thinks perhaps we should take the singular reading, following the Septuagint.

(46:3) the El. I am not sure why exactly the text occasionally has El instead of the more common word for "God", but in this case I simply attempt to reproduce what the Hebrew text has, while reserving the translation "God" for the more common term.

(46:5) Pharaoh. The Septuagint reads Joseph (BHK).

(46:9) and Hezron. According to Kittel, about sixty Masoretic manuscripts, and the Samaritan Pentateuch, omit "and". The Leningrad Codex retains it.

(46:10) Jemuel. Numbers 26:12 and 1 Chronicles 4:24 read Nemuel.

(46:10) Ohad. This name does not appear in the relevant passages in Numbers or Chronicles, and Kittel thinks perhaps it should be deleted as a typographical error duplicating Zohar.

(46:10) Jachin. 1 Chronicles 4:24 reads Jarib.

(46:10) Zohar. Numbers 26:13 and 1 Chronicles 4:24 read Zerah. The Samaritan Pentateuch agrees with the Masoretic Text's Zohar.

(46:11) Gershon. 1 Chronicles 6:16 reads Gershom.

(46:11) Kohath. According to Kittel, about sixty manuscripts read "and Kohath".

(46:12) Hamul. The Samaritan Pentateuch reads Hamuel (Kittel). The Septuagint reads Iemouel (NETS, Rahlfs-Hanhart, Swete).

(46:13) Puvah, Iob. 1 Chronicles 7:1, Qere, reads Puah, Jashub, while 1 Chronicles 7:1, Kethib, reads Puah, yšyb. The Samaritan Pentateuch agrees with the Chronicles reading as to "Puah" (Kittel). The Septuagint agrees with "Jashub", and Kittel says "Jashub" is the correct reading.

(46:13) Iob. Hebrew ywb. This is not the same name as the eponymous character of the Book of Job.

(46:16) Ziphion. Numbers 26:15 reads Zephon. The Samaritan Pentateuch agrees with Numbers (Kittel).

(46:16) Shuni. According to Kittel, the Samaritan Pentateuch and four manuscripts read "and Shuni".

(46:16) and Ezbon. The Masoretic Text reads wʔṣbn, while according to Kittel the Samaritan Pentateuch and Peshitta read wʔṣbʕwn. Numbers 26:16 reads Ozni.

(46:16) Arodi. Numbers 26:17 reads Arod.

(46:17) Ishvah. This name is absent from Numbers 26:44.

(46:17) Ishvi. Hebrew yišwi, where Kittel thinks perhaps we should read yišyo.

(46:20) Here the Septuagint adds descendants of Manasseh and Ephraim; see NETS.

(46:21) Becher. The Septuagint reads Chobor (NETS, Swete).

(46:21) Ashbel. After this word the Septuagint adds, And the sons of Bala were.

(46:21) Ehi. Numbers 26:38 reads Ahiram. Kittel says that this text should be emended to agree with Numbers.

(46:21) Muppim. Numbers 26:39 reads, Shephupham, while 1 Chronicles 7:12 reads, Shuppim. Kittel says that this text should be emended to Shupham, and cites as support the shuphami of Numbers 26:39.

(46:21) Huppim. Numbers 26:39 reads Hupham. Kittel says that this text should be emended to agree with Numbers.

(46:21) Ard. 1 Chronicles 8:3 reads Addar. The Septuagint reads, And Gera begot Arad (Swete, confirmed by NETS).

(46:22) who were born. According to Kittel we should read, whom she bore, following twenty-nine manuscripts, five manuscripts of the Targum Onkelos, the Septuagint, and other witnesses.

(46:23) sons. A sevirin reading given by Ginsburg reads son.

(46:23) Hushim. Numbers 26:42 reads Shuham. The Septuagint reads Asom (Kittel).

(46:24) Jahzeel. 1 Chronicles 7:13 reads Jahaziel.

(46:24) Shillem. 1 Chronicles 7:13 reads Shallum.

(46:26) All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt. ASV note: "Or, souls belonging to Jacob that came.

(46:27) two. The Septuagint reads nine (Kittel, Swete, NETS).

(46:27) seventy. The Septuagint reads seventy-five (Kittel).

(46:28) to show him the way. The Septuagint reads to meet him, and follows with a rather confusing reference to "Heroonpolis in the land of Rameses", with no mention of Goshen at all.

(46:28) they came. According to Kittel, the Samaritan Pentateuch, Peshitta, and Vulgate read he came.

(46:31) and to his father's house. These words are missing in the Septuagint.

(46:34) Goshen. The Septuagint reads Gesem Arabia (Swete, confirmed by Kittel and NETS).

(46:34) every shepherd is. According to Kittel, twenty-four manuscripts, the Samaritan Pentateuch, possibly the Targums of Onkelos and Jonathan, and other witnesses support the reading, all shepherds are.
