After the expulsion of the humans from the orchard in Genesis 3, Genesis picks up with the life of Adam and Eve after their expulsion from Eden. We find here the narrative of Cain and Abel, followed by the birth of Seth. The genealogy of Genesis 4 runs parallel to the genealogy of Genesis 5 (see here).
And the human knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and she said, I have created a man with Yahweh. 2 And again she gave birth, to his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3 After some time, Cain brought some of the produce of the ground as an offering to Yahweh. 4 And Abel, he also brought some of the firstborn of his flock, and of its fat. And Yahweh looked [favorably] toward Abel and his offering. 5 But toward Cain and his offering he did not look [favorably]. And Cain was very angry, and his expression darkened.
And Yahweh said to Cain, Why are you angry? And why has your expression darkened? 7 If you do well, is there not uplifting? And if you do not do well, sin crouches at the entrance. And toward you is its desire, and you will rule over it.
And Cain said to Abel his brother. And then, when they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and killed him.
And Yahweh said to Cain, Where is Abel your brother?
And he said, I do not know. Am I my brother's guardian?
And he said, What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground. 11 And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. 12 When you till the ground, it will no longer yield to you its strength. You will be a vagabond and a wanderer on the earth.
And Cain said to Yahweh, My punishment is greater than I can bear! 14 Indeed, you have driven me out today from the face of the earth, and from your face I will hidden. And it will happen that whoever finds me will kill me.
And Yahweh said to him, Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold. And Yahweh set a mark for Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.
And Cain went out from the presence of Yahweh, and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city, and named it after his son Enoch. 18 And to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad begot Mehuyael, and Mehiyael begot Methushael, and Methushael begot Lamek.
And Lamek took himself two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. 20 And Adah begot Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell with livestock and tents. 21 And his brother's name was Jubal. He was the father of all who handle kinnor and ugab. 22 As for Zillah, she bore Tubal Cain, a hammerer of every sharpener of bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal Cain was Naamah.
And Lamek said to his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice, wives of Lamek, listen to what I say. For I have slain a man for wounding me, and a youth for hurting me. 24 If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamek seventy-sevenfold.
And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son, and called his name Seth: because God has appointed for me another seed in place of Abel, because Cain killed him. 26 And as for Seth, to him also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. Then was begun calling on the name of Yahweh.
