Now Sarai, Abram's wife, bore him no children; and she had a slave, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. 2 And Sarai said to Abram, See now, Yahweh has preventing me from having children. Please, go to bed with my slave; perhaps I will obtain children by her. And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. 3 And Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her slave, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife. 4 And he went to bed with Hagar, and she conceived, and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

And Sarai said to Abram, My wrong be upon you! I put my slave in your bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes. May Yahweh judge between me and you.

But Abram said to Sarai, Look, your slave is in your hand. Do to her what is good in your eyes. And Sarai treated her harshly, and she ran away from her.

And an angel of Yahweh found her by the fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain on the way to Shur. 8 And he said, Hagar, Sarai's slave, where are you coming from?

And she said, I am running away from my mistress Sarai.

And the angel of Yahweh said to her, Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hands.

And the angel of Yahweh said to her, I will greatly multiply your seed, so that it will not be numbered for multitude.

And the angel of Yahweh said to her, Behold, you are pregnant, and will bear a son, and you shall call his name Ishmael, because Yahweh has heard your affliction. 12 And he will be a wild ass among men: his hand against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he will dwell opposite all his brethren.

And she called the name of Yahweh, who spoke to her, You are a God who Sees, because she said, Have I even here seen the one who sees me? 14 Therefore the well is called Beer Lahai Roi: behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 16 And Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
