After these things, a message from Yahweh came to Abram in a vision, saying,
Fear not, Abram. I am your shield. Your reward is exceedingly great.
And Abram said, My Lord Yahweh. What can you give me, when I go childless, and the ben-mesheq of my house is Damascus Eliezer.
And Abram said, See, you have given me no seed, and now a son of my household will inherit from me.
And lo, a message from Yahweh came to him, saying, This one will not inherit from you, but rather one from your own body will be your heir.
And he brought him outside. And he said, Look now skyward, and count the stars, if you can count them. And he said to him, So your seed shall be.
And he trusted in Yahweh, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
And he said to him, I am Yahweh, who brought you out from Ur Kasdim to give you this land to inherit.
And he said, My Lord Yahweh, how will I know that I will inherit it?
And he said to him, Take me a heifer three years old, a she-goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtle-dove, and a fledgling. 10 And he took for him all these, and cut them down the middle, and set each one's half facing its mate. But the birds he did not divide.
And birds of prey swooped down upon the carcasses, and Abram drove them away. 12 As evening fell, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and behold, a horror of great darkness was falling upon him.
And he said to Abram, Know surely that your seed will be foreigners in a land not their own, and will serve them, and they will oppress them four hundred years. 14 But as for that nation which they serve, I will judge them, and afterward, they will come out with great possessions. 15 And you will go to your fathers in peace; you will be buried at a good old age. 16 And in the fourth generation they will return here, because the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.
Now, when the sun went down, and it was dark, there was a smoking oven, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces. 18 On that day Yahweh made a covenant with Abram, saying, To your seed I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the Great River, the river Euphrates: 19 the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, 20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, 21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.
