1 And Yahweh said to Abram, Get yourself out of your land and your kin, and from your father's household, to the land which I will show you. 2 And I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great, so that you will be an exemplar of blessedness. 3 And I will bless those who bless you, and those who denigrate you I will curse, and all the families of the earth will use you in blessing one another.

4 And Abram went, as Yahweh told him to, and Lot went with him, and Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. 5 And Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother's son, and all their property that they had acquired, and the slaves whom they had gotten in Haran, and went to go to the land of Canaan. And they came to the land of Canaan.

6 And Abram travelled through the land to the place of Shechem, at the oak of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.

7 And Yahweh appeared to Abram, and he said, To your seed I will give this land. And he built there an altar to Yahweh, who had appeared to him. 8 And he moved on from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and the Ai on the east. And he built there an altar to Yahweh, and called on the name of Yahweh. 9 And Abram left and travelled in stages toward the Negev.

10 And there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, because the famine was heavy in the land. 11 Now, as he approached the border of Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, See now, I know that you are a woman of beautiful appearance. 12 And when the Egyptians see you, they will say, This is his wife, and kill me, and you they will let live. 13 Please say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well on your account, so that my life will be preserved by your actions.

14 Now, when Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that his wife was very beautiful. 15 And Pharaoh's officials saw her and praised her to Pharaoh, and the woman was taken to Pharaoh's house. 16 And he treated Abram well on her account, and he had sheep, and cattle, and donkeys, and male slaves, and female slaves, and female donkeys, and camels. 17 And Yahweh struck Pharaoh with great plagues, and his household, on account of Sarai, Abram's wife.

18 And Pharaoh called for Abram and said, What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, She is my sister, so that I took her as my wife? Now here is your wife. Take [her] and go.

So take your wife here and go. 20 And Pharaoh commanded men concerning him, and they sent him off with his wife and all he had.
