And Abel also brought some of the firstborn of his flock and their fat. And Yahweh looked favorably on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look favorably. And Cain was very angry, and his expression darkened.

Commentators have offered all sorts of speculations about why God preferred Abel to Cain, but they are just that: speculation. The story simply does not tell us this detail. Nor does the story tell us how Cain realized that God did not look favorably on him.
