Various biblical passages hold that the shedding of innocent blood created a sort of pollution which lead to the land and/or God taking revenge on its inhabitants for murder. However strange "your brother's blood cries out" might sound to modern ears, it is at home in the Hebrew Bible. Compare, for example, Genesis 9:4-6, Leviticus 18:28, and Deuteronomy 21:1-9.
