Where the Masoretic Text reads le-adam, "to Adam", Kittel says that one should read la-adam, "to the human." That he is right can be seen when you look at the nearby uses of the word adam without a prefixed particle: it takes the article ha-, and here, by analogy, must reasonably be supposed to take the contracted form, -a-.
