And the name of the third river is Hiddekel. It goes east of Asshur. And the fourth river is Perath.
The easiest to identify is Perath, which is simply the Hebrew term for the Euphrates. The consonants p-r-t are preserved to this day, and the term appears all over the Bible. This much is clear.
Hiddekel only appears twice in the Bible, but still, by general consensus, is clearly the Tigris. Oddly, it is said to be qidmat asshur, which would seem to mean "east of Assyria," but this doesn't seem quite right, geographically. Dillmann suggests "before", that is, "in front of" Assyria as the meaning instead. From the perspective of someone in Canaan, a river to the west of Assyria is "in front of" it.
