Elias Levita (1469-1549), whose name has been spelled various ways, was an influential scholar of Hebrew grammar. Among his various accomplishment, one that stands out is that he made influential the (correct) idea that the vowel-signs of the Hebrew Bible are in fact a medieval addition to the biblical text. You can read about his life in Christian David Ginsburg's introduction to his English translation of Massoreth ha-Massoreth, here.
