Dispensationalism is the term for a variety of beliefs about biblical prophecy current within conservative Protestantism. They mostly trace back to John Nelson Darby, who originated the notion of what is commonly called the rapture. From the standpoint of mainstream biblical studies, the views of Darby and similar religious figures generally wrench a variety of biblical passages out of their ancient contexts and anachronistically attempt to apply them to the modern world.
