Dagesh is a name for a dot which can appear in the middle of some letters in Hebrew. It has two main functions. One function is to distinguish between "hard" and "soft" pronunciations. This function can be seen in the letters bet, gimel, dalet, kaf, pe, and tav.
The other function of the dalet is gemination, that is, the doubling of the length of a consonant. This function is no longer heard in Modern Israeli speech.
