(BA) Bet
...

22 July 2022

bet or beth is the second letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and makes the sound or a b or a v. In pointed texts, the difference is indicated by the presence of absence of a dagesh. Bet with a dagesh is pronounced b as in Babylon, while bet without the dagesh is pronounced v as in vineyard.

In the Hebrew alphabet, bet comes after aleph, and before gimel.

When used as a numeral, bet has the value of 2. This usage is not found in the text of the Hebrew Bible itself, but is used to indicate verse and chapter numbers in some editions.
